HAPPY DAYS ARE HERE AGAIN(?)

America is indeed the land of opportunity. What other country would select a man who has never managed so much as a McDonald’s restaurant as head of the executive branch of the national government and commander-in-chief of its armed forces? Not every land would elect such a neophyte president of the United States. Is this a great country or what?

By the way, when will I get my letter from my mortgage company telling me I don’t have to pay my mortgage anymore?

John McCain was the worst Republican presidential candidate of my lifetime. Even worse than George H.W. Bush in 1992. Honestly, I wonder if McCain actually wanted to win this election. Certainly he did not campaign as if he wanted to. His only decision wish indicated to me that he has any understanding of how to win was his selection of Sarah Palin as his vice-presidential candidate. She was the only bright spot of the campaign for conservatives. Now, of course, McCain’s staffers are busy backstabbing Palin, who I’m sure has to wonder why she ever consented to run with such a bunch of losers.

I agree with Rush Limbaugh; to heck with this gracious in defeat business! We lost to a socialist nee Marxist candidate whose tenure in office will be a disaster. Everything said about Obama during the campaign was true and the fact he won changes that not a whit. Obama was and is unqualified to be president; the fact he will be demonstrates that 52% of the voters on November 4th simply refused to accept the truth. Voters acting stupidly is not an uncommon phenomena but I fear the corruption of the public education system will make this occurrence all too common in national elections.

There is a lot of whistling past the graveyard talk from some conservatives that Obama will govern from the center. Poppycock. Nothing in Obama’s background or in his campaign gives proof in support of this belief. Obama is the wholly owned creation of the extreme left of the Democrat party and the pressure to enact their agenda will prove irresistible. If for no other reason, Obama knows the flood of money which won him this election came largely from the occupants of the fever swaps on the wacko left fringe. Obama can’t afford not to placate them. But make no mistake, he actually shares their agenda.

The conservative civil war which will be raging for a next few months will render organized Congressional opposition tepid at best. The apostates who trashed Palin and argue for a re-definition of conservatism, such as David Frum, David Brooks, and Kathleen Parker to name but a few, should not have a place in the new conservative movement. There is no room for the pusillanimous and ideological fellow travelers in the conservative movement. These people elected to stab conservatives in the back during the most important presidential election since 1860 or perhaps in all our history, to look good to their cocktail party buddies, and I, for one, don’t wish to be associated with them.

It’s going to be hard to be conservative for the next few months. Backing Obama will be the trendy and stylish thing. We will be inundated with flattering media about the new president, first lady, and new administration. The Obamamedia (formerly called the mainstream media) willingly destroyed what remained of its reputation for objectivity to elect Obama and ca n be counted on to continue to call his every move "brilliant," "innovative," or "historic." By the time we get to January 20th I expect more than a few commentators to go orgasmic.

Foreign policy took a backseat during most of this campaign. Iraq was hardly mentioned. However, given Obama’s stated positions on Iraq and Afghanistan, we can only hope that our brave soldiers and marines can finish off the opposition before Obama takes over and retreats from both countries. Never fear, I predict that foreign policy will wind up dominating the first term of the Obama administration. Obama’s world view will lead to policies and decisions resulting in a diminution of American influence and power. We and our allies will be in greater danger of terrorist attack because the Democrats don’t believe we are in a war with terrorists and will undo much that has been done to protect our security.

Well, what can we expect right off the bat? The Democrats owe the labor unions big time, so expect the check-card legislation, which does away with the secret ballot when workers chose whether to join a union, to be at the top of their list of legislation. I doubt the Senate Republicans can sustain a filibuster to block the bill, so expect that to become law.

Abortion is a religious sacrament to liberals, so expect quick repeal of the federal Partial Birth Abortion ban. Indeed, Obama has pledged to sign federal legislation which preempts even state abortion regulations (don’t ask me how that is constitutional). It’s easy and quick to pass such a bill and it pays back a vociferous pressure group in the Democrat party.

Homosexuals are another group in line for a payoff. The Defense of Marriage Act, passed in 1996, will be target no. 1 for the gay rights lobby. Target no. 2 will be the military’s "Don’t ask, don’t tell" policy on homosexuals in the military. Expect the Democrat Congress to cater to the homosexual lobby on these issues. Expect the federal bureaucracies to enact rules making it much harder or impossible for faith based groups to receive federal funds.

Unlike some, I think Obama and the Congress will enact some sort of tax "cut," or at least something which can be spun as a tax cut. The memory of Bill Clinton going back on his tax cut pledge is too fresh in their minds to fail to pass something. But of course all the money (and more) will be recouped through soak-the-rich increases on upper income brackets and allowing the Bush tax cuts to expire. And the leftists may go for the whole ball game and nationalize 401(k) and other private pension plans. After all, they have to find money somewhere to pay for all their programs to ensure "fairness" and equitable distribution of wealth.

It occurs to me that Obama represents a more urbane, chic version of Huey Long. He also will be our first rock star president. Most troubling, however, is that Obama is for so many of his followers an object of worship. In this regard he is sui generis as president; we’ve never had an object of cult worship as the chief executive. If you saw the raptous looks given Obama by the Grant Park crowd can you doubt they would follow him anywhere? A mindless crowd following a charismatic leader is the prescription for fascism. The republican form of government in this country is in serious trouble. A messiah can’t afford to disappoint the masses.

I suppose I should say something positive about Obama. He read a speech well, he’s well tailored, he’s very clean (watch the Beatles movie, "A Hard Day’s Night"), he’s seems a good family man and his victory has brought joy to lots of people.

_______________________________________________

I keeping hearing that this is a center-right nation. If that’s the case, why is Obama the president-elect and the Congress dominated by liberal Democrats? Why does my home state of Arkansas keeping electing liberal Democrat senators, congressmen, and state officers? People may talk a good conservative game but they have not voted that way.

I hope to see the day when the conservative intelligentsia and elite understand that it is more important to defeat liberals than to be liked by them.

Finally, I recommend that we all learn Spanish. Immigration "reform," legalizing millions of illegal aliens and fast tracking them to citizenship and the right to vote (for Democrats of course), is a certainty.
