I watched Mr. Obama take the oath of office and deliver his speech. I thought the speech was flat and filled with cliches. His acknowledgment of his predecessor’s service was begrudging and de minimis. Obama seemed to hurry the speech and spelled on the few applause lines. By no matter, the fawning media will elevate the performance to mythical status soon enough.

I admit that the ceremony left me saddened.. I cannot shake the feeling that Obama’s induction to the presidency represents in a real and deep way an adieu to the country I grew up in and love. Obama represents the coming to power of a world view and morality which is foreign to mind. While Obama’s speech referred to responsibility and continuity, in fact he and his expressed policies represent a rejection by the voters of so much which makes America unique: limited government, free markets, and individual responsibility for success or failure. But the horse left the barn in last September when the House of Representatives reversed itself and approved the $ 700 billion bailout for the American financial system.

The president has promised government spending on a scale never before seen to address the nation’s economic doldrums. He foresees trillion (that’s with a T) dollar federal budget deficits for years to come. Let’s cut to the chase: Obama is telling us that he and a cooperative leftist Congress dominated by Democrats will bankrupt the United States, wreck the domestic economy, destroy the savings of millions, and leave the great mass of Americans dependent on government for their very survival. In a figurative twinkling of an eye, the people of the United States elected a unapologetic socialist and skilled demigod as president and embraced the European nanny-state. So this is how the American capitalism expires, with barely a whimper of protest? Indeed this is a frivolous and weak generation, willing to sell the legacy of past for promises that the mother-government will care for our future. We will learn that these promises will carry the same value of our currency - worthless. At least Esau received a bowl of soup in exchange for selling his birthright to Jacob. We will be left with ashes.

It seems that Mr. Obama’s nominee for the secretary of the Treasury failed to pay his income and social security taxes for several years, and consequently has been forced to amend his tax returns for these years and something like $35,000 in taxes and penalties. Let not your heart be troubled however. No senator, Republican or Democrat, seems to believe this omission disqualifies Mr. Geithner from becoming the Secretary of the Treasury. Of course, not paying income taxes hasn’t prevented Charlie Rangel was remaining chair of the House Ways and Means Committee either. Apparently at some point an individual graduates into that an elite club whose membership enjoys immunity from those laws and rules which trouble the rest of us. Paying income taxes on time and in the right amount is only for suckers, viz., the ordinary American worker. Everyday brings fresh evidence for the need for a second American revolution.

Carol Browner is Mr. Obama’s environment czar. She is also a member of the Socialist International and a member of the church of the global warming. Is this one of “centrist” appointments that Beltway Republican commentators are pleasantly surprised by?

Wouldn’t it be nice it there existed an actual opposition party to Obama and the leftist Democrats? At present, an incoherent, confused and rudderless blob known as the Republican Party is the nominal opposition. What is it about Washington, D.C., that emasculates Republicans and renders them sterile? Every utterance from Congressional Republicans gives evidence they are still clueless about how to confront the Democrats and dangerously out of touch with their own conservative base.

George W. Bush leaves office having successfully prevented another terrorist attack on the United States. For this he deserves the thanks of all Americans. His refusal to countenance defeat in Iraq was an act of genuine presidential leadership. But . . . on immigration he was an unmitigated disaster, the best president Mexico ever had. In the last months of this term Bush succumbed to the hysterical advice of his economic advisers and moved the nation into socialism. He failed to veto bloated bills passed by Republican Congresses, which contributed to Republicans losing their reputation as the party of fiscal conservatism. Bush failed to prevent North Korea from developing an atomic bomb and Iran from being on the verge of doing so. He apparently stopped Israel from attacking Iran’s nuclear facilities, a wrong-headed decision which will have tragic consequences for the Middle East and the United States. With all that, I never for one moment doubted that George Bush is a good and decent man who acted as his conscience directed and what he believed to be the best interest of the country. He and his wife are people of class and grace. We will miss them.

A spokesman for Mr. Obama has stated that Obama will eliminate the “Don’t Ask, Don’t Tell” policy regarding homosexuals serving in the military. According to polls of military personnel, a significant percentage will opt to retire or decline to re-enlist if the policy is jettisoned. Who knows how many who might be considering enlisting will not do so if the policy is changed? The push to legitimize homosexuality will be the ruin of our society. Man cannot contravene God’s law and expect to prosper. Homosexual conduct is perversion; it corrupts all it touches.

Conservatives are arguing among themselves whether we should wish Obama a successful presidency. I hope he’s successful in thwarting attacks on our nation and having terrorists killed in Afghanistan or wherever else they are found. On just about everything else, unless he changes his positions, I hope Obama fails. I don’t want abortion on demand, homosexuals in the military, increased taxes, nationalized health insurance, a nuclear armed Iran, a hallowed and demoralized military, a larger federal government, more environmental regulation suffocating industry and business, and ultra-leftist judges, just to name a few things.
Reading the headlines everyday enforces my feeling that insanity has gripped the population. It will take some sort of great shock to snap us out of it. Between Obama, the Democrats and the terrorists, we can count on getting one soon.
